Sun launches Ultrasparc 2

Sun Micrososystems is introducing Niagara 2 today, which is more officially known as the Ultrasparc 2.

The new CPU has 8 cores and each one able to run up to 8 threads, making a total of 64 active threads per socket. Each core has a dedicated Floating Point unit (as oposed to Niagara 1, that had only one FP unit for all the 8 cores) and is expected to debut at 1.4 GHz.

In addition, Niagara 2 has embedded an on-chip 10GbE NIC, eight crypto acceleration units and eight lanes of PCI Express I/O, along with four memory controllers.
