Google Compute Engine switches from custom image to Debian

google-compute-engine-logo.pngFollowing the launch of Debian 7 Wheezy, Google is moving it’s default operating system image type for Google Compute Engine from Linux OS GCEL (Google Compute Engine Linux) to Debian 6.0 and 7.0.

This was announced on May 9th in a post on the App Engine Blog. Debian is a famously stable Linux distribution and version 7 was released earlier this week after over two years of development and Google itself is a heavy contributor to the Debian code base
